SMG F-1 Private May 2024 Updates

SMG F-1 Private Program

The SMG Basic, Basic Plus, and Private Choice programs are still open for the 24/25 school year, and as of today, there are no application deadlines.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

The cultural exchange program frequently stirs up emotions among students, as their entire lives undergo a swift change after just one plane ride. It’s advisable to proactively address the expectations of both students and their parents. Recently, the F-1 Basic Team underwent training in Youth Mental Health. This training equipped the team with additional strategies to aid students dealing with anxiety, homesickness, and uncertainty. Our ultimate objective remains to provide unwavering support to students, enabling them to flourish during their time in the U.S.

These five topics are a good start to discuss with students to help manage their expectations.
  1. Transportation — Adjusting to transportation may involve relying on host families for rides, as public transportation isn’t as readily available as it is back home. Adhering to host family rules and embracing this change are essential for acclimating to the new environment.
  2. Private Schools — Our F-1 private program, established in 1997, offers exceptional opportunities for students who consistently thrive in these settings. For students placed in religious schools, we emphasize the importance of respect, open-mindedness, and a willingness to learn about religion as they would any other subject. Students are never pressured to convert or adopt beliefs they’re uncomfortable with. Clearly outlining expectations from the outset facilitates seamless adjustment upon arrival.
  3. Meals — Differences in meal routines, such as grab-and-go breakfasts, microwaved dinners, and staggered family mealtimes, are common.
  4. Friends — Making friends may initially pose a challenge, but engaging in activities can facilitate the process. Encouraging students to participate in school, church, and community activities fosters social connections.
  5. Technology — While disconnecting from social media and phones can be difficult, students should make a concerted effort to limit communication with home early on. This aids in overcoming homesickness and fully immersing themselves in their new lives. Constant communication with family and friends back home impedes adjustment to the host family, hindering the enjoyment of the experience. If students have uncertainties, they should reach out to their Area Rep. for guidance.

Remind students that just because something is different, doesn’t make it wrong!
